The Backwater Page

A look at what's coming on the Lake Area History Pages

I am presently working on a series of mapsheets that I call "Under the Lake" maps." They depict man-made features that were inundated by the lake when it filled in 1931 - features such as buildings, roads, fence lines, and cemeteries. Each mapsheet will cover an area of 5 to 10 miles of the lake. They will be printed in full color on sheets measuring approximately 12" by 20" and will fit nicely into poster frames. They will be available either by mail order directly from me, or through selected local retail outlets. I'm pretty excited about this, and as they become available I will post the information on the Lake Area History Pages index page. For a sneak peak, scroll down the index page to "Under the Lake at Mile 31."

I am now writing a monthly column for the Lake of the Ozarks Business Journal. The column is called "Lake Stories," and will include some of the material posted on these History Pages.

I appreciate all your e-mail comments and words of encouragement. Many of you have suggested topics for future postings, and I look forward to doing them. Thanks to those of you who have sent me information for use in the postings. There is no such thing as "too much" source material when it comes to historical essays and stories.

From time to time I receive requests for information on former resorts in the area. Unfortunately, I do not have an extensive file on the subject. However, I'd like to post photos of those great old family resorts along with whatever information you could provide. If you have a favorite photograph from vacations past, and would like to see it posted on the Lake Area History Pages, please contact me at Lake Area History.
